When goddess Demeter’s daughter Persephone was kidnapped by Hades, he tricked her into eating 6 pomegranate seeds in the underworld. Thus she was doomed to spend 6 months a year there for eternity. 

The goddess Demeter mourned her daughter’s absence and the earth was infertile (fall-winter). In this time people offered pomegranates to the goddess Demeter & prayed for fertile land.
